ameenullah, I like your Waving Kitty.  I grabbed it for my cat collection.  Thanks.

I'm seeing a clear pattern in style, and most languages have things in common, so, IMHO with a 'dummie' book and a function reference one can do alot.

Which is horrible for the industy.  We've had clients "walk away" because their kid (who's like 14) knows php and made a calander (actually he downloaded a calander), but it just goes to show.  The language and the system are becoming so n00bie friendly that its dummifing the industy.

I did 8 interviews last week trying to find a junior programmer in php.  Many exist, but most are just script kiddies.  They know where to find help, and they are masters of the ol' copy+paste.

Hey, I resemble that remark.  Just kidding.  First, I'm not 14.  Second, although I use others' scripts I do make a point to read the manual (PHP, Perl) and learn what I can about what I'm doing, and I try to figure it out first on my own before asking for help.  So some of us script kiddie types deserve a little credit (even if just a little).

I've been told that if one is trying to get employment as a programmer, he will do better having C# on the resume than PHP.  PHP isn't a sought after language by employers.  Employers want people who know C# and .NET.

Mozilla 1.5 (too lazy to upgrade).
I use Mozilla Mail for email so I use the suite.
Never IE except for cross-browser testing. (I like IE's bookmarks though)

No complaints here - take as long as you like.
The price is right so I want you to be happy, Rickard.

I like how you set up the Forums, Categories, and Descriptions, richiepearce.

Did you try viewing install.php after installation?  It should say:

The file 'config.php' already exists which would mean that PunBB is already installed. You should go here instead.

If it displays as above your site is safe.  If the form doesn't display on the webpage, hackers won't have access to it.  The only thing the public has access to is whatever displays as a webpage - the PHP source code is safely tucked away.

Paid hosting is pretty inexpensive these days.

I just installed 1.1.5 and it was ridiculously easy.
(No wonder there are forums everywhere you look these days.)
I've never installed a forum before so I was a complete beginner.
You wrote good instructions.
I like your little 'test post' welcome message.
Thanks for the new toy. smile

No problem, just curious.  I'll go ahead and try 1.1.5.  If the upgrade is a pain I can always just delete it (saving the DB) and start over.

What's the ETA for version 1.2?
Is it soon enough that I should wait, or should I start now with 1.1.5?

Writing the kind of php code which Rickard has produced requires real talent.

How good is it?  I know - that sounds like a joke, and I'm sure it's good.  But I don't know much about programming so the only way I can know is to ask.  People have told me, for example, that phpBB's code is really bad, and that FUD's is relatively good.

Except that he didn't write the clean markup for 1.2, Paul did. smile

I know; I was thanking everybody as a group - Rickard, Paul, Chacmool, and anyone else.

I agree that writing good XHTML/CSS isn't as easy as some think.  It's getting easier, but there are lots of cross browser compatibility issues.

Thanks for writing 1.2 in XHTML/CSS.
That's the main reason I like this forum and am planning to use it.

I was planning to take another one - the FUD Forum maybe, and convert it from table-layout to CSS, but you saved me the trouble.

I haven't looked at the source code yet and I don't know much about PHP, but it sounds like you gave as much attention to writing well-structured PHP as you did to writing clean markup.

Good job.

Is there a feature that allows the admin to approve registrations?   In other words, can a forum be set up so that only members of an organization can join and post.

Cool, thanks.

How does the updating work?

A perl script "opens" the forums and parse the html-code for statistics each night. There are some different ways to do it: parse the index-page, or extern.php. I'm also working on an own stats-file people could use to make it easier for me. This one could also include more info than I can fetch from the original files.

I'd be interested in seeing the Perl.  You didn't write it did you?  Sounds like what I heard someone else refer to as a 'scraper' for gathering content for an RSS feed.

I like the 'it was short for PULCHRITUDINOUS' version.

(Looks like some sort of line-wrapping for the Code Block would be handy. wink )

Isn't there a feature that allows the admin to approve registrations?  I would have thought that would be standard.  So, for example, a forum can be read by the public but only members of an organization can join and post to it.

I third that.

BTW, I like the colors you used at http://forum.blogcms.com/ .
(I also like this quick post thingy - very cool.)
