Since you're including PunBB's common.php from Wordpress, there is no need for PunBB to run unregister_globals. You can safely comment out the call to unregister_globals in common.php and comment out the whole function in functions.php. That should do it.

The option in the admin interface reads:
"Display info on the index page about guests and registered users currently browsing the forums."
So it doesn't disable the display completely, just the list on the index page.

I think it's a good idea. However, there are few things I dislike more than fiddling with regular expressions. If we go through with this, I think giving all the bbcode regexps an overhaul is a good idea. We need a regexp guru. Anyone? Shawn, how are you at regular expressions?

The redirect is there to provide the user with feedback. Providing feedback is fundamental for good usability. If the redirect is removed, how will the user know that e.g. the profile was updated? Because the screen flickered?

For some reason, you have mixed collations for different tables in your PunBB database. This is not something that happens on its own.

Yes, but the version you're looking at was released in 2005. When 1.3 is released, it will include 2006.

I think initially it was used in handle_url_tag() which is called via the regex, so it needed to be there, but now I don't think it's used anymore.
