FYI, I'm all about keeping things REALLY simple for my users, and keeping "managing content" as simple as possible.  I don't want any bells, whistles, etc. just the necessary bits (sound familiar.... like PunBB).  I thought I had found this in CMSmadesimple, but it's missing some key elements and still isn't easy enough for my users.    I just discovered something that a friends uses on her sites and I'm testing it out... so far I'm impressed.   All it is, is a WYSIWYG editor for you clients to edit pages... that's it.  Here it is:  www.editwrx.com   I haven't purchased a license yet, but I'm testing it out with some of my users.   If they like it as much as I think they will then I'm good to go.

Its funny how many CMS projects are out there.  Even with all of them... it doesn't seem like anything stands out as being special.  Kinda frustrating.  I want a CMS that stands out from the crowd like Pun stands out from the other forum offerings.

Even on my very first impression of Pun... I just knew it was the forum for me.  Clean, simple, standard compliant, so straightforward my grandma could figure out how to start her own community.  All this... not to mention a great group of technology gurus with a drive and zeal for better software solutions.

That's exactly what I'm looking for... a CMS with the same goals, quality, and simplicity of PunBB.  I think CMSMadeSimple is the closest thing, but it is still pretty young and constantly changing.

I like CMSMadeSimple.  The goal of the developer seems very similar to Rickard... keep it simple.   I got so tired of all the bells and whistles in so many of the other CMS's that I just wanted something that my newbie user's could access and do WYSIWYG editing of web pages.

That's an interesting perspective... didn't really think about flooding.

I'm still curious about suggestions and what you use... if you do use them.

Hey PunBB Buddies!

I'm working on my ranks and need some clever ideas for ranks.  I also thought it would be fun to see what other people are using.

Do you have suggestions for my inkjet forum?

Also, when you post what you use, could you also post the # of posts until they achieve that rank?

Thanks in advance... I look forward to your cleaver suggestions and quick wit!

I'm hosting a few different forums of completely different content /  topics / admistrators.

So, with only 2 - 5 forums it is best to just install completely separate instances (files and DB) of punbb?

Connorhd, I'm only thinking 2 - 5 forums.   Is there a component in punBB that is setup to run multiple forums from one set of files, or is this more of a hack?   If it is a hack (i.e. lots of tweaking, editing, etc.)  I'll probably just install the forums individually in different folders.   If it is a simple edit during setup or in a config file that was intended during development then I'll do that.

Thanks again!

Hey All,

Can you point me to instructions on the best way to have multiple forums on one domain?

Do most people install all the files in a separate directory and create a separate DB?

What are the pros / cons to doing it the way above and any other options.

Sorry if it's already been discussed, but I did a search and couldn't find specifics about the best way to approach running multiple forums on one site.

Thanks in advance!

Dang... I wish I was a programmer!   Looking more closely there are aspects of both I like.  For example the "new post" is really nice on the old version, but the layout and the number of views on the new one is great too.   Decisions... decisions....

Thanks again for this ever important mod!

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth (thanks alexkingorg for the update) but is there anybody with skillz that can make this included file / mod show like the old mod?   I don't want to confuse my users and really like the old layout.

See the old version running here:

Thanks in advance!

I agree that if everyone was subscribed to every thread than the server load would be huge.  I'm simply saying that people should be given easier ways to subscribe to threads they would already choose to be subscribed to.  For example, I wish I had been subscribed to this thread when I posted... but I wasn't!   I would have visited this page MANY more times over the past month if I was subscribed... but I wasn't and I didn't.

If my site got 100k more pageviews per month because of implementing these features, it would definitely increase the server load... but my guess is that it would be worth it.

Of all the many requests for addons that I see posted on this board, I think this feature is more than just "bells and whistles", but is actually a tool that increases user retention and repeat visitors.

An exaggerated illustration:  If I could increase the overall popularity of a site by 100% it would put a lot more strain on the server.  Does this mean that I shouldn't advertise and that I should discourage people to visit my site because I don't want to add strain to my server?

Sure, if this feature is added my load will probably increase, but I think my usage / retention will increase proportionately and I believe this is something every board / forum owner wants.

Is a board owner's first goal to increase "customer" usage, or decrease resource usage?

I'd love to make a mod... but I am mod challenged.  smile

Yes, eBay itself is completely different, but the concept is the same.  If you are interested in a thread enough to post, wouldn't you be interested enough to receive notifications of replies?

I'd be curious to know how many people ALWAYS subscribe to posts to which they reply, and how many don't.

(by the way... see how fast my reply was?  Because I remembered to go back and hit subscribe to topic).

I think most, if not all of us, want our users to keep coming back to our forums.  This is our bread and butter.  If a small change like this will help us retain 50% more visitors, and increase usage by 40% wouldn't it be worth it?

haha.... I'm so frustrated, but the reason is a good one!

I made a comment on this thread a while ago, and GUESS WHAT... I forgot to his "subscribe to this topic"!

I wish:
1)  There was a "subscribe to topic" check box in the quick reply.
2)  There was an option to always have "subscribe to topic" default checked when I reply.  I don't think I have EVER replied to a post and not wanted to see the replies.  Meaning I've ALWAYS wanted to be subscribed to posts I respond to.  An interesting example, on eBay, whenever you contact a seller about an item it automatically enters that item into your "watched items" page.  It is assumed that if you are going to the trouble of contacting them, you must be interested in watching the item.  Similar concept here.
3)  I read about the possibility for a "subscribe to forum".  That would be an EXCELLENT idea and would automatically resolve a lot of the issues addressed above.

my $.02

...now, after I post, I'll wait, and then have to subscribe to topic.  I hope I can remember to do that this time!

stopwords... oh, I get it!   Is there a list of stopwords that can be edited?

Thanks connorhd... youdaman!

Friends,

On my forum here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/search.php

I search for the term "never" and get zero results.

What is odd is that this thread here has the term:
http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=59

Any ideas what is going on?

I think people should be posting what types of machines / systems their boards are running on.   Do these monster boards (with thousands of users) require a dedicated server like most other forum applications do, or is PunBB efficient & lean enough that it will run well on a shared server or VPS?

Like This:

Total number of registered users:
Total number of topics:
Total number of posts:
DB Size:
Monthly Bandwidth:
Host System: Shared server, VPS, Dedicated, Specs, etc.

I think most "free" applications are going to be under GPL.  I rarely, if ever, see anything that is decent that isn't under GPL.

I wish I understood GPL better... the whole definition of what "free" is confuses me!  smile    It seems there are some things that you can charge for and other's that you can't.

Well, Rickard is pretty active on these forums (he just posted today) so I'd wait to hear what he says.   I think whatever happens you have a good idea to "kick back a little bit from every copy I sell to support the PunBB cause"

waiting, refreshing.... no new fix.... waiting, refreshing.... no new fix.... waiting, refreshing.... no new fix....

I keep having issues with the forum loading. It either doesn't load at all, or loads with all the css / styles missing.   It isn't happening on my punbb forum or any others, just here and just for the past 3 days.  I know (or think) it isn't registrar related, but i thought I'd mention it.

Anybody else, or just me?

I can't find this site... "The page cannot be displayed"

Okay, please don't beat me for diggin' up this old thread, but I thought it had LOTS of very interesting posts and I wanted to ask a question or two to many of those who posted in this topic...

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO YOUR FORUMS???

Many are closed / unavailable... one even says "bye" on the homepage:  WHY???    Did it close because of costs of running it or another reason?

Also, many more are on a different forum script?!!?!?!  WHY???   Did you move it from PunBB  because of the reason mentioned earlier in this thread... because members requested more features... or another reason?

Well, even if I don't get answers to those questions, I'd be super curious to see some of the more recent super huge PunBB forums.  smile

Who will answer the call?

Who has the PHP knowledge to make the necessary change to this great bit of code?

Friends,

I tried to do this mod on a new install of punBB 1.2 and got the following error:

"Notice: Undefined variable: ak_latest in /home/user/public_html/talk/index.php on line 256"

Any ideas what's going on and/or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!
