Jansson, I've force refreshed locally so I know that isn't the problem.  I deleted the cache files, but then I get an error like: Error: Unable to write configuration cache file to cache directory. Please make sure PHP has write access to the directory 'cache'.

I just tried to upgrade to 1.2.6 and even though everything seemed to go smoothly (uploaded all the files, ran the upgrade script and got the message that the DB was upgraded correctly) but my forum still says version 1.2.5 ???

I tried to run the upgrade script again and it said not a supported version (which means that it must think I'm at version 1.2.6)?  Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks in advance.

FYI, here is a great tool for determining what ads will show on which pages:

SWEET!   I had a bit of trepidation to delete php files, but I had faith in the all knowing Samratys!  big_smile

Worked like a charm!

Subversion... gotcha.   I made the change to cache.php, but I guess I still need to remove cachefile for it to work?   Can you help a non-programmer out... where is the cachefile how do I remove it?  In the DB or is it an actual file?

For threads/forums with many posters that have auto-subscribe on... that means every time someone posts in that thread everyone who is subscribed needs to be informed.

But isn't it pretty much already like that?   People who want to be subscribed get email notifications?

This feature, if I understand correctly, is just to help people remember to subscribe that otherwise would have liked to, but forgot.

Not a big deal if only a handful of people think this is a good idea.  I'm all about lean and mean.  Just trying to do a pro's / con's for this type of thing and it seems like this is relatively small.

So, was the idea that the admin could enable or disable this?  I don't think the forum size is an issue, it is a return on investment issue.   If your income (direct or indirect) from a forum is relatively proportional to the size and activity of your forum then the size of the forum shouldn't matter as your hosting / server should also be growing relatively proportionally.   Now, if your forum is just a hobby / fun forum then maybe size matters.  Did that make any sense????

Heck, I don't even understand rss feeds!   big_smile

Sorry, bad communication on my end:  I'm saying that the system will just be sending a few additional emails for those people who forgot to hit "subscribe".   I was concerned that each and every pageview/post would have one more query, but the additional emails isn't an issue since the user's would have wanted them in the first place if they had only remembered to hit subscribe.

Oh... well, then, GO FOR IT!!!   big_smile    I mean, heck, if the process will only add more emails to the sytem, but not resources during every post / pageview then it should totally be a user defined option.

almost_there said, "I hate being automatically subscribed to a topic just because I posted a reply."

I respect that opinion, but don't understand it at all.   Maybe I've just got too much time on my hands, but I ALWAYS want to know what people say in reply to my posts... you know, to see if they flame me or praise my greatness! cool

Don't most of you feel the same way when you look at your forum experiences... wouldn't you USUALLY want to see replies to a topic you replied to?

Okay, I'm an idiot.   Am I to assume the fix is in the newest "release" of this great script?

Although my interest mostly lies in "NEW topic notification"

I tend to agree.  My guess (not being a programmer) is that another check each time someone posts to see if they have the autosubscribe set to on / off would put more unnecessary load on the server.  The "return" of not having to select subscribe isn't as big as the "risk" of more resource usage.   Oh, but what about a small subscribe checkbox under the quick reply box?

I think the "NEW topic notification" and/or weekly/daily digests is a winner.  big_smile

Smartys, you rock!  Sometimes I wish I spoke code as fluently as you guys do!   Why did I waste all that time (MONTHS) playing Scorched Earth?

Question.  Is the only change the time from 86400 seconds to 259200 seconds or were there other changes in there?

Thanks again!

Hey coding masters.   I really like the "Show recent posts" link and I'm wondering if there is a way to hack / mod / change the time frame on it for, um... those of us with less popular forums.  Like change it from 24 hours to 48, 72, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Will any / all of those three additions really make such a huge resource usage impact on the server?   I'll have to rely on the group's collective coding experience on this one.   Are we saying a 1%, 10%, 25% 50% or 100% increase in resource usage over what the forum script is already using?

It is hard for me to figure out the pro's and con's without the proper information.   Or am I not looking at this the right way?

Also, I'm a bit mod adverse.  Not being a programmer I get frustrated when I hack a script and/or use a mod and then a new version of the kernel/base script comes out and my mod is broke and I don't have a way to fix it.

I don't know if I agree or understand some of the logic above.   Sure, I agree that the items above will add more stress to the server, but so do almost all of the features of this great script.   If we really are trying to make something that will simply "function" without resource usage, then we should strip off the subscribe function altogether.  Of course I'm not serious, but hopefully you get my point.  Somewhere along the line it was decided that the ROI of having a subscribe feature and all the "stress"  (investment) it would add to the server would provide enough return on that investment.

I'm simply suggesting the same thing, the ability to add a bit more resource usage in exchange for more visits and sticky users.

In response to "What if a thousand people subscribe to that category?", I say HALLELUIA... that means I've got 1,000 members and also 1,000 members who will be getting an email THEY SIGNED UP FOR.  I figure a majority may come back to my forums that otherwise may not have.

Am I making any sense?   Where are my marketing buddies on here that can see what I'm saying??? Are most of you people here programmers?  big_smile

I just had a user request more ways to be notified of new posts / topics.

Is there anything in the works, here are some things that I believe could be considered and implemented... either with the base application or as hacks / mods:

1)  Default "Subscribe to topic" settings so you are automatically subscribed to every topic you reply to.
2)  "Subscribe to Category"  The ability to get emails whenever a new topic is started in a specific category
3)  Daily / weekly digests of new topics for a forum and/or for categories.

As I mentioned before I think all forum owners want more visitors, more participation, and more sticky users.   These things mentioned in this thread are the types of tools that will help us achieve MORE!  big_smile

The goal of punbb is to be fast and lightweight.  Can the programmer types comment on how each of the items above would impact how fast and lightweight punbb is?

Thanks!

Friends,

I'm having the same problem.   I've got 4 Ranks on my inkjet forum: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/

InkJet Forum Newbie 0
InkJet Forum Participator 10
InkJet Guru 25
InkJet Master 50

No matter what number I set "InkJet Master" to, everyone is still a Guru.

Hopefully a fix in the next release.  I'm trying to keep my forum as un-modded as possible.

Beautiful!  Great idea and a great job.   Very intuitive and user friendly.

BEAUTIFUL!   This application gets better and better... I'm so glad I've told all my hosting buddies about it.

Thanks Connorhd... again, you are always there with the right answers!  smile

Anybody know where to edit the code?  I can't image it being a major change for me, just hard to find.

Friends,

When I move a topic to a different category I'm given the option to create a link from the old category to the new category.   Personally I think the default should be that the check box is NOT checked.   I don't want a forum cluttered with links to other categories and sometimes I forget to un-check this box.  So, I've got two questions:

1)  Is there a way to make this check box default be UNCHECKED?
2)  How do you delete a "this topic has been moved here" link from another category?

Thanks in advance!

Yup, unfortunately it doesn't work in anything other than IE, BUT, all of the newbie user's I'd be setting it up for are using IE.   Most people using Firefox know how to use other editors and more complex CMS's.   I like simple and efficient.   The cool thing is it writes static pages which makes the server load WAY less than a CMS which is always querying the DB.
