email sent with info!

Sorry for the confusion... I'm trying to sort this all out myself.

Desired Behavior:
Login to forums and click on chat and automatically be logged into chat.

Current Behavior:
Login to forums and click on chat... required to then login to chat.  Fortunately once you are logged into chat  (and have told punbb to keep you logged in) it seems that your login is remembered from then on in chat.

It is the initial double login that I'd love to get resolved.

Thanks Smartys!

Very close...

I'm using the new punbb.php file and here's what happens:  I create a new punbb user via the registration system.  Login as that new user, and browse to my chat folder.  It pulls up the login

BUT... once I'm logged in, it keeps me logged in as that user since I'm still logged in as that user via the forum cookie.

Anybody else want to test this to see if it is just my installation vs. an issue with how we're going about this process.

Thanks!

Smartys, thanks for the info, but unfortunately... no dice.   I used the new code for the lib/auth/punbb.php file and it didn't work.   I then tried from another PC (wondering if it was cookie related) and it didn't work.   I then went through the install process over again (for X7) and I'm still required to login.

Any thoughts?

Thanks much!

Smartys, am I understanding your post above correctly that you fixed somthing which will automatically login users to chat?

Let me know what to change / do and I'll change and test!

Worked like a charm!

Thanks guys!

Hey E-Oreo, I see you got my email regarding your excellent chat script and getting it to work with PunBB!   You really should add it to your list of supported apps!

BTW, Any ideas about passing along login credetials so users don't have to login twice (once to forum and once to chat)?

Ok, here's my update on installing X7Chat with PunBB:

The whole install went PERFECTLY... not a single hangup using smartys notes above.  Once I deleted the install files I visited the /chat/ directory:

1)  I noticed I was still asked to login:  is this correct? I thought I'd already be logged into chat if I was logged into my forum?  Maybe they are just suppose to pull from the same user DB but chat requires a second login?
2)  I tried the login info for my admin user in PunBB and received:

Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/mother/public_html/forum/chat/lib/auth/punbb.php on line 80
line 80 =   $query = $db->DoQuery("SELECT * FROM {$prefix}users WHERE username='$_COOKIE[$auth_ucookie]'");

3)  I used the "send password" tool on the chat login screen and it sent me a random password for my admin user (also reset the password for the same PunBB user... so that's a good sign that most things are working properly.

4)  Tried the same user and new password, but received the same error message above.

Any thoughts?   Thanks!

Wow, thanks much Smartys, I'll give it a try.

So.... either:

1)  This mod / integration already existed and my searches didn't pick it up, or
2)  You're a freakin' fast coder!

Hey All,

I've been shopping around for a chat client and saw a really nice opensource one here:
http://x7chat.com

I was amazed that it currently supports the following PHP apps:

Invision Board 1.X
Invision Board 2.X
Mambo 4.5.X
MercuryBoard 1.1.X
PhpBB 2.0.X
PhpNuke 7.X
PostNuke 0.075
XMB 1.9
SMF 1.X
Xoops
YabbSE 1.5.X

BUT WAIT... no PunBB support?!?!   yikes

Is it possible for some mod master to create the process for integrating this cool chat client with PunBB so we can get added to that list?

Maybe this is related, but I'm not sure....

I've got "Quick Post" on my board and it is awesome.  Problem is this:   Often user's are typing a reply to a great thread they just read... they are about done typing the reply and think, "Oh... I better subscribe to this."   Well, here's what happens:

1)  They hit the subscribe link above and what they typed in the quick post is gone.
2)  They try to remember to go back and scroll down the page then click "subscribe".

Either option isn't ideal.   Is it possible to put a nice little check box above or next to the submit button?

Keep up the great work!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for.  I love when stuff's already solved and answered without having to post.

BTW, side note:  Only issue with editing code is that upgrades sometimes wipe them out... but on the other hand we don't want to turn punbb into a bloated beast of options!

Rickard,

You're awesome!  I was able to successfully (and relatively easilly) restore all 227 of this user's very helpful posts.  I'm so glad PunBB works as well as it does and that my backup proceedures are proving to work perfectly.

PunBB Friends,

My PunBB forum is doing well: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum

I had a very experienced user with a ton of posts that got offended and deleted all of his posts.  I've talked him into allowing me to restore his posts... problem is I'm not positive how to do it.

Fortunately his userID still exists and I have daily backups.  I have restored the DB to a temporary DB location and use phpMyAdmin to administer the DB.

Can I simply export all his posts from the temp DB and then use "Import" from phpMyAdmin to restore all his posts?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey All,

The other day I was searching my forum for a bit of text that I KNEW was in my forum somewhere but I couldn't get it pulled up in the search results.   I did some digging and discovered the "Rebuild search index" in the Maintenance section.

I don't think I've ever "added, edited or removed posts manually in the database " or anything else that would have caused this to happen, so a few questions come to mind:

1)  Other than "added, edited or removed posts manually in the database " what can cause the search results to go wacky?
2)  How can one tell (other than the way I mentioned above) that it is time to rebuild the search DB?
3)  How often should this be done?

I really try to encourage my users to search the forum before posting.  This isn't much of a suggestion if the search results are often needing to be rebuilt.

Thanks in advance!

BTW:  BEST FORUM SOFTWARE EVER!

This has been lots of fun.... any updates?  Do we have a winner for biggest PunBB installation / usage?   What about 2nd and 3rd place?

Any updates / ideas on this?  Are we still good to go to add this to a future version?

I think it would be great to have the option on the admin side and/or the user side to check a box that says:

"Automatically subscribe me to all threads to which I've posted."

I've said it before, but I think any website owner is looking for "sticky" customers and this is a big way to do it.   Yeah, it will increase server load, but with the extra money you (should) be making it would easily cover additional server resources.  smile

Friends,

I have a lot of friends that use Yahoo Groups.  I want to steal them away because I HATE Yahoo's system and all their millions of ads.

The problem has been that I almost get people converted over to a forum but then they ask, "Can I reply to the posts using my email?"   That's the deal breaker right there.   Many of these people are computer illiterate and if it is beyond sending an email they won't do it.

So, my questions:

1)  Is there any way to make PunBB comparable to a Yahoo Groups type system where people can email their replies?
2)  Is there a script that is (almost) as good as PunBB that I can have people use instead of Yahoo Groups?

Thanks!

Hey Rickard!  Currently running PHP version 4.3.9.    I don't know of a version upgrade, but I guess that's possible.  Could that have been the cause?

I thought that too.... but  it fit all the specs.  In fact, when I changed the permissions of the folder it took the image.    So, avatars were working before with my server / script config and then stopped working within the past month.

Very odd.

Hey All,

I got a user who said he tried to upload an image and got this error, "The server was unable to save the uploaded file. Please contact the forum administrator at ...."

What is odd is that avatars have been working fine for the past year I've been using punBB (that I know of).  I've got an avatar as do a bunch of other people and I've had no complaints until now.

I've read the other forum posts on the error and solved the problem by chmodding the directory from 750 to 777 but here's my question...

Why was everything working before with 750 permissions and why do I need 777 permissions now?  Is it possible somehow that directory WAS 777 before and somehow mysteriously changed to 750?  Or did a newer version of punBB start requiring 777 permissions?

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't the expectation that the return on this investment will be greater than the investment itself?   So $400 in a 20 x 20 pixel will provide > $400 in some kind of revenue?

I'd be more happy to see Rickard put the money in his pocket and/or run some ads on www.ask.com : http://sponsoredlistings.ask.com/

Hey all!

A question about upgrading:   In theory couldn't I upload the 14 files mentioned here: http://punbb.org/download/hdiff/hdiff-1 … 1.2.8.html

and then run the upload script?

I just figure there has to be a better way of upgrading my 1.26 install than overwriting all the files.

Pure genius!!!   I simply removed the php scripts in the cache directory and that fixed all my problems!

-No more odd cache errors

-My version now says, "1.2.6".

Amazing to think that such a little thing could make everything better.

Thanks so much Rickard for all your work and help!

Friends,

I've been having some issues with what seems to be a bad upgrade (as I posted here: http://punbb.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8049&p=3 ).

Here's what I said, "I just tried to upgrade to 1.2.6 and even though everything seemed to go smoothly (uploaded all the files, ran the upgrade script and got the message that the DB was upgraded correctly) but my forum still says version 1.2.5 ???

I tried to run the upgrade script again and it said not a supported version (which means that it must think I'm at version 1.2.6)?  Any ideas what is going on?"

It isn't a local cache issue.   I was going to just leave it alone until I started to notice some other issues recently.

For example, when I try to put the site in "Maintenance mode" I get "Error: Unable to write configuration cache file to cache directory. Please make sure PHP has write access to the directory 'cache'. "

Also, when I try to add a new forum I get "Error: Unable to write quickjump cache file to cache directory. Please make sure PHP has write access to the directory 'cache'. "   Even though I got this error the forum is created???

When I try to delete that new forum I get: "Error: Unable to write quickjump cache file to cache directory. Please make sure PHP has write access to the directory 'cache'. "

I've TRIPLE checked all the permissions for the directory and the files, but no dice.

?s:
1) How can I fix these problems and get from 1.2.5 to 1.2.6?
2) Are these two issues (the cache issue and version # issue) related?
3) If I can't fix these problems, is there a way to take all the data in my DB and apply it to a fresh clean install?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Server OS is RedHat running Cpanel.  punBB was/is running fine, but the upgrade didn't change the version number, so I'm wondering if all of the upgrade really took place.  There is write access to the cache directory, I only get that error after I delete all the cache files.
