i think it would be interesting making a portal out of punBB.

i would make an admin section for the front page layout and an admin section for content...
the admin section would be laid out in differnt area's, lets say the theme is sectioned.... ie logo, TOP, topmenu, banner, left, static_center (content that doest change, mabe like a description above the news), centernews, bottombanner, bottom, eula/copywrite, Right....

then have a option to add a component of types, like a menu component, or poll component, or news component and add it to the desired location area, including its order, ie main menu above polls on the left side, (hrm, this goes below im lazy tongue - with main menu having a section for desired links added to it).

then each component would be changed or edited or added in the content section... ie polls, news, menu's etc, click it, and click add or edit on the desiired item to edit it. each post would be an item.... news items would obviously make its own section (visiable or not) in the main forums so users can add comments.

however i dont know PHP programming tongue i used to code stuff like this in ASP but i since stoped doing so cause it annoyed me to work on windows machines sad

i use PM's because our site is a community site, but we want it to be very fast, like punbb is.
we also have a dev team working with forums, currently using phpBB, and looking to transfer to something faster IE punBB, however I CANNOT DO THAT WITHOUT private messages tongue lol

but im not inclined to ask the developer of this to include them into his package, however 3RD PARTY addon is just what im looking for.  i need the converter for phpBB to punBB (including a private message and poll mod addon (and support for converting those aswell!!!!!)).

this would be great, fast with some bloat, but i guess i have to sacrafise that, because as developers for a major modification/game we need to communicate.

check it out if you guys are interested, its a HL2 modifcation and its a tactical shooter, based on past tactical games much like rainbow six. www.totalretribution.com i was testing out 1.5 and even tho i can convert it, i want the major updates of 1.2 like security fixes and "faster"ness to it tongue lol (not to mention the 3rd party addons i need for it).

very nice. i remember always trying to get opensourcecms to host a link to punbb and stuff (before the redesign) then after the redesign they added it, im very glad too!

my current setup is punBB and Mambo CMS, the two best out their!

however someone needs to read what an admin says.....

Re:PunBB - 2005/01/10 18:05  Bert,

For some reason I am not able to do a fresh install of this version I could only do the upgrade from previous version.

I just found out recently that we will not showcase a CMS here if we could not do a fresh install.

You might want to look into it.

im guessing that if you dont know, you should probably not do this, or learn computers ALOT more first. pick up some books etc.

anyways, i will try and help.

click on download link from the punbb front page, then choose the link to download the punbb zip file... zip is a file type that compresses a lot of files and puts them all in one file called a zip file, files have a name/description, and then a file extention... so its like this filename.extention and the extention for zip files is filename.zip

just click to download the file and it should download in your browser (assuming you have privilidges to do so on your computer).

save it to a location you know where it will be, again windows has a structure of files and folders (or directories).
you may want to get a file to open up the zip file, such as www.winzip.com or http://www.7-zip.org/ those are free, follow the download instructions above tongue

use your windows explorer or "my computer" icon on the desktop to search for the location you stored the files and run them, a zip file will only open if you have installed something to open it with, but EXE files will open automatically.

i hope this helps, its probably much better if you read a book on these things, or take a class at your local college or something.

mabe something on here might help?
http://www.phpconcept.net/index.en.php

or mabe not. i fail at life tongue

nice! i cant wait to try this out once the other guys get the PM and poll working big_smile

where are you hosting your forums at ? where did u upload them too? some providers dont provide what you need for free (and some do tongue).

you enter in your database location as "localhost" and the database name as the one you created with a user you created (with a password for the user) remember all that info.  you do this usually in something called Cpanel, or have your server administrator create one for you (ask him what to name them i guess tongue)

if you used a place like geocities it wont work, they dont support databases sad

any screenshots?  i have no idea what it does.  willing to try it after someone makes a PM and Poll system for 1.2

get working on this for 1.2, as well as Private messages for 1.2.

lol tongue i cant use 1.2 until these are made, thats all. tongue (ohh ya the phpbb conversion tool aswell big_smile)

will this mod work for 1.2? i want PM's in 1.2

and i always use email to notify me of private messages. i have forum accounts at MANY differnt forums... i need to know if im getting messaged. and if i dont want to be noticed by email, then i choose not to in the options (for any forum capable of PM's they do this such as phpbb, vb, etc).

i would like an option to enable it per admins request or users request, doesnt matter, but i require an email address thats valid for my forums.

ohh btw, if i use the current mods for private messages and etc for 1.1.5, do those get removed when converting to 1.2?
how does that work?

cause it says in the converter readme to install those first then convert it.

hrm... nvrmind, i guess im just going to wait for 1.2 and the plugins when they come.

please force yourself, im looking forward to it, and as an admin i have to be respected to my clients, that means i have to choose the correct software with as little problems as possible. big_smile

i too know how annoying this kind of thing can get, but its better for all of us if you could do it please. tongue

you guys have been helpfull! thanks.

i think i will wait for 1.2 to release then use the beta updater (i guess i will have to search for the link tongue)

ok, i have a website that uses phpBB 2.0.11 and i dont really want to change it because i know punBB doesnt have polls and private message systems (i run punbb on my site, but not the one in question).

1. i am at a delema because punBB 1.2 releases in a few days, and i wont know if any of those plugins work for 1.2 or if they will be developed soon after release.

2. i dont know if the conversion tool makes a compleat new database for punBB or if it renames everything in the phpBB database for punbb...  (basically if something goes wrong i want to just delete teh punbb folder and rename the phpBB folder to normal and still raintain function, isntead of having to reinstall the backup i did. (easy way out tongue)

3. and after the conversion im still not sure if things will work because of 1.2... will the migration tool be fixed by the author to support 1.2? has anyone contacted him?

if someone can respond to what they know in the
1.
2.
3.
style format it would be helpfull, even if u dont know say number 2 or 3 or 1 or wahtever just put "dunno". thanks (makes it easier to read and comprehand.

i dont belive their are any chats based on irc, which is something i love to use, using my own client (ie mIRC).  for a website it is usually not really needed to join using the irc client, its to much to bother with for users, from a user stand point.  so a flash or java script would be better, to tell ya the truth, i think outa the both flash would be better, i only say this because it reacts much faster than that of java for MOST users (i use linux and windows, but in windows java interface lags and load times are terrable, but when using linux i have no problems at all). using flash would diminish all of that.

well, i usually just link to a MIRC irc link on my front page to save time im just giving suggestions.

ohh lmao, its been a long time, your right tongue lol i just got messed up with it all, see how i said i hated converting things to xhtml tongue

well it is possible to do the comment number thing, the method that he is using will not display them.  its much faster that way, just like punbb is suppose to be.

if you need to im sure someone will code it to allow for it, but its not something that needs to be done in my opinion, tho for admin purposes's i like to see if theirs new comments on my site and view them, cause i dont often look at the comments.... but then again, if i wanted to i can just load up the forum news thread page and see.

i would like to somehow see the live chat from www.deviantart.com be incorperated. im not sure if they made it publicly available yet. but its less problematic than the chats that use java, which i hate, well unless im on my linux box, then i dont mind so much.

ya when i was trying to code my site along time ago using xhtml i was like wtf, this is so annoying tongue but its worth it.
most of its getting the tags right like ending with /> instead of \> (i see that the title on this page is wrong it needs the /> UNLESS im mistaken, use the validate form on w3 to make sure. and not only that but the header and the use of DIV's mainly.

i had a problem using div's in the past because they would come out all whacko in certain browsers, but i think its a ok now, tho i havent done any web coding or deisgns in a long while so im not sure.

xhtml is the future and things being made should represent that, plus xhtml is more of a standard you should follow, meaning things have to be coded correctly, meaning they should show up correctly every time and a browser only has to render it one way instead of making up for mistakes, much like IE does to websites sad as stated above, "html allows lose invalid markup" xhtml doesnt, meaning its a better standard and if a browser is setup to run that standard their should be no probelms and should be faster at producing the page.

but dont listen to me tongue

mindlessoath: What you want is a full-fledged CMS. I really only wrote the simple news plugin because I needed it. I can't say I intend on adding lots of functionality to it. It does exactly what I need and what I think will be enough for most people. However, writing plugins is easy so don't count out the possibility of someone else, or yourself, writing the plugin.

well im not wanting a full CMS, nore do i belive delayed dates on forum posts would be considered a CMS only function, its just an advanced administer function.  i give an example of that being front page news, but can also be usefull with forum only posts.

if you say it can be created in a plugin thats great, i hope someone creates that, but i would also like to see a future version of punBB consider that option.....

i know the front news page is all static so if i wanted to write a script to display a forum post any date and time (from the front page) i can, but the point is that forum post is still their and viewable, and thats why i want the function incorperated into the forums themselfs, NOT only for that reason but for forum administration too.

im not saying you have to, just take it into consideration, its basically an if statement when it comes down to it??? isnt it? (i dont code myself anymore(i never coded in php either tongue) so thats why i am asking).

i wont argue this i was just requesting, and hope it gets considered. no harm in that.

the last request would be to add an admin function to change the EMAILS sent out to new registered users. i remember searching all over to find the text that was suppose to be sent to registered people, and i never found it. cause in it i would have added a message to have users CHANGE THEIR PASSWORD once they login using the temp password.  i had this problem with many people not bothering to do this and it got crazy for a while.

mabe these are suggestions that should be in annother topic, im sorry.

I love the new site, its great!

i have to comment tho... a feature that should be setup for the front page of news posting.

we i myself and others run a website we often have to publish news at a later date, but are not always around to post that news, meaning.... we have to write it ahead of time and have a script make it apear when its time.  many times we have info thats under an NDA agreement, and that agreement is usually up before im awake, but my reivews are done the day before the time is up, so i have it timed to show up at that time.

if punBB could make an administer or forum moderator function (not for users cause that could cause major problems) to schedual a thread to be shown at a certain time and date.

obviously this is something i dont expect soon, but its really something to think about.
