I know this question has probably been asked a few times already, but i'm asking again as i can't find any definitive answers.. (suggestion - perhaps a guide could me posted & made sticky)

I've uploaded a test 1.3RC forum onto some spare webspace & had a play around, however i'm now considering updating one of my existing forums running 1.2.14 (yes i know i should upgrade more often, but it's not easy with a modified forum) to 1.3.

I've done a test with an old database backup basically installing pun1.3 onto the site & then using an old database from 1.2 to see what happens.  As you can imagine & as i thought it would, 1.3 is looking for tables that haven't been created & keeps chucking out errors.

is there a migration tool on the cards or is there one & i just can't find it, or have i got to do everything long-hand & edit the database & create tables etc along with editing scripts manually?

Also, one thing i want to ask.  how does 1.3 fare with coppermine integration?  if I upgrade a bridged 1.2 forum to 1.3, does this mean that all my coppermine bridging is going to go up the wall & my coppermine extension of the forum become useless?  I dare say i should ask the question on the coppemine support site, but then i don't know how 1.3 works as the same bridging may work because it's technically a 1. release & not a 2. release of PunBB.

Also as a sub-question is there a way of turning off the "Currently used extensions:" notifier in the footer.  I'd sooner it be turned off as personally I think it's an open invite to encourage hackers if you are telling the world you have a modified forum.

Not really a problem, just a niggle, when updating to IE7 browser, i notice that sometimes the header text & links won't appear (i.e. the bit with Index, User list, Rules Search, Profile, Login/out options & the forum title etc) when you drop the page by scrolling & then scrolling back up.  This only seems to be a problem on some of the site's I've put forums on & not all of them.. i've noticed the punres site does the same, but the punbb.org site doesn't.

Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with the CSS output file (i'm guessing it's an overhang from using SpinkBB), the IE7 browser or something else a little more sinister?

have to say i like simkins original attempt, in fact i've used it on a couple of sites already (although i have altered the CSS slightly to alter the colourscheme to match the forum or site theme) - one site i've built, it was requested by the owner to the same design for a standalone coppermine gallery as they liked the layout on one of my own sites.

my site - with punbb forum click here
Customer site - currently without forum click here

Rod's design looks impressive but doesn't really match the look of the original PunBB

Now fully functioning the new improved, www.stokebikeruns.co.uk

I've also managed to integrate coppermine & even found a punbb template for coppermine to make the site look uniform

thoughts please.

I know this is an old thread, but if you want an editor for .tpl files or things like .php or even .asp etc, download Araneae (it's a free program) & open the files with that.

It's a bit like notepad to use but with more features specifically for editing & creating web files.

http://www.ornj.net/araneae/

That's what i use for editing .tpl, CSS files & doing the PHP coding changes in forum mods & i've never had any problems.

Thanks Elbekko

i've tried the shell access approach but so far no joy... not sure if i have this or not.  I'm still getting used to this new hosting package so i'm probably the cause of the errors when i try.

I've discovered that Araneae (which if you are not familiar with it is a text type HTML editor - an ideal tool for editing php files for doing forum & code mods.. by the way it's freeware!) can open the SQL file.  I've opened the file & removed the search tables (which shrunk the file down to 2.4MB - which is the result I was after & all the old OScommerce tables as well as the bosdev directory files, however now when i run the SQL upload i get an error once the upload has finished "Invalid default value for 'id'. with the table information shown.  At 1st i noticed the error with the old OScommerce tables left in & then later the bosdev directory files so i removed then but whichever table it comes to it seems to chuck out the same error.  Any ideas?

at the moment i'm uploading the SQL via a client on my hosting control.. the only other way i know of is to use an upload restore facility but i tried this & it still won't go over the 5mb threshold.

it's a case of i know what to remove, just i can't find a way to remove it as the SQL database file is just one big lump that i can't break down to delete the tables I don't need.  Good call though on the search tables, something i'd not thought of... no doubt i'd have to rebuild the index anyway so i suppose it makes sence to remove the original search tables as well to free up a few more valuable bits of unneccesary data.

I've a similar problem at present.

I've just had to move my site from one host to another host & encountered difficulty.

I have tried to run the SQL on the server control panel to upload the old database but there is a 5mb upload limit on the hosting & the database is 7mb.

So i am asking is it possible i can shrink the database size down.

I do have a local copy of MySQL on my PC which is used to run a database on a software package i have installed, so is there any way i could perhaps edit the site database in the local SQL package to get rid of some dead wood - I'm sure it's possible but i don't know how as I know about as much about this version of SQL as i know about hang-gliding - which is very little!.

I know there are a few tables in there I could get rid of, left over from an old OScommerce install that i got rid of, an old directoryinstall attempt that failed & some old punbb tables from past installations on a different prefix, left over when converting the database & installing a new updated forum script which would probably help me lose a couple of MB if i could shift them from the database.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Nibbler..

to be honest i hear various rumours that the development team on the 2 applications when launched is the same & the next minute you hear they aren't related & just look alike in layout terms.

However knowing all the bother i've had with phpBB & trying to stop spammers & hackers, i'd sooner be safe than sorry.

anyway, i've done the database migrate & scrapped the phpBB site in favour of PunBB on the site i had it on - www.stokebikeruns.co.uk

Use the migration tool to switch to PunBB then tongue

Hi elbekko (& everyone else) smile

i've finally had enough of that damn phpBB forum on my other site..  i've just deleted another wave of spammers offering viagra, dating sites, porn etc etc i wouldn 't care but it's a forum on a childrens charity site & the last i want is to see kids coming across that drivel!!

OK i need the conversion tool to migrate the database (that i know), what else do i need.  Am i right in assuming i will need to integrate a few mods such as a Private Messaging mod, a poll mod & what ever other features that phpBB has?

point me in the right direction please someone smile

your suggestions are very much appeciated smile

have to say i do have dreamweaver but for some reason always favour NOF... probably for ease of use, however learning the package is a bit tricky but once you get an idea of how it works, it becomes quite simple.

website pro's i think

there is a reason why i do the /html folder... mainly because the package i use for site designing (NetObjects Fusion) does it by default - it can be altered to set it for other methods but pretty much these day's i've grown to like the original idea & then it has helped me because then i can set the different stuff in the relevent folders... the homepage is always in the root directory, all the HTML pages go in the HTML folder & then any applications (such as forums, guestbooks, directory pages, mailing managers for newsletters etc) go into seperate folders.. this mainly keeps the whole site neat so i know if i have to alter on part of the site i just go into the relevent folder so if for example i have a index.php file in a seperate folder, i'm not going to fall into the trap editing a guestbook index file when i'm altering an index file from a different folder.   At one time i used to drop all the HTML files into the root directory but usually got into a terrible mess!

Plus I'm able to keep seperate folders for images, flash files & javascripts.. like i say just for my own convenience... it doesn't make navigation any more difficult.

opinions please...

www.discoandkaraoke.net

a bit of history..

the site started out life as a place for me to promote my own services however a few months back i was under some pressure to launch a directory & a forum of my own but make it open to everyone, bowing to pressure here is the result.

I'm using pretty much a stock version of punBB with templates & mods available on punres (although finding arcade games is proving tricky), Now the site has been added to punbbig.  As well the forum i'm using as a Bosdev directory script to make the directory section, everything else is my own work.

.... & i'm 99% happy with it so far (always open to new suggestions though)

For my next project, I think it's time to start work converting one of my other sites to run punbb instead of phpbb - a bikers charity site www.stokebikeruns.co.uk

I think coppermine integration has been done, seach for it smile

And for your other question: I think that will be in PunBB 1.3

glad to hear it... i'm just a bit concerned about the risks with coppermine coming from the phpBB family.  I have a phpBB forum on one of my sites already - biggest mistake i made!!  i spend more time dealing with hackers & spammers than i do posting messages on the damn thing!

Also, just a quick one while i have it in mind (yes I am a pain), is there punBB version of Coppermine gallery available?

bearing in mind Coppermine & phpBB seem to go hand in hand ( so to speak) so i assume has the same problems with hackers, coding errors & exploits exist on both phpBB & coppermine.  I don't fancy using coppermine alongside punBB

Only me again...

a few people who are members on my forum are now asking if there is a way to allow guests to post in a forum area without registering, despite my insistance that is probably asking for trouble from spammers or trouble causers who have taken the hump or been banned, they still want me to add some sort of guest integration.

I've got 2 ideas in mind & just want to know if there are mods around (i'm sure they are but so far can't find them on Punres) that can do these...

1) guests post in but before enterting their post have to verifiy they are human by doing a verification code shown in an image to help combat againt automated spam bots & posts from spammers programs in general.

2) A feature where guests posts have be accepted (and if neccesary edited or deleted) by a moderator or admin before they appear on the forum.

3) something that does both the above in one mod.

4) anything similar that i've not thought of

thanks in advance

That'll be the one i'm after then, cheers Pogenwurst cool

I follow you now, just as a follow up from this, is there a mod so you can see what any users who are online are doing (posting a message, changing profile etc) or what page or thread they are viewing?  Sort of like "viewonline.php" that phpBB uses?

just going back to this... (i know it's an old thread)

is what you want to do actually show them on the online users - which usually lists members who are online - when the search engine spiders are visiting.. I've seen this as a mod for VB but if used on PunBB for instance I would imagine it needs to appear something like:-
-------------------------------

Registered users online: 1
Guests online: 0

Online:   Pun Member, googlebot, yahoo! slurp, msnbot, google adsense

-----------------------------------

Hi everyone,

not sure if this has been asked before, i've had a search & can't find anything so i apologise if i am going over something that has already been fixed/answered.

I've just started / relaunched a forum on one of my domains - www.discoandkaraoke.net & a few of the members are now asking if there is a way of automating the smilies.

By this i mean where they can click the smiliey image they want to use from a table or pop-up & it automatically gets enterted into the message reply instead of them having to type in the command in long hand by using the ": : "& the text in between or whatever else is set such as ")" or "=(".

Thanks in advance
