Ooo, nice.  I'll have to try that out at some point soon-ish ...  Thanks for letting us know about the related posted big_smile

If there was a place where I could see images of previews of the default styles - okay, then I would agree with you.  However, until there is such a page, ...  I was thinking of doing something like this for my users, maybe I'll just do it.

You'd argue top right corner then - I suppose that makes sense to a point.  It seems like customization hits the top fairly hard, since, that's what people are going to see first (for the most part).  You certainly don't want to waste space here, and if style previewing is a total waste of space ...

I don't know, it's like my email provider - FastMail.fm.  Having a page where I can see the different styles would make any preview on the page worth far less than necessary.

EDIT:  I've done such for my boards.  http://strivinglife.net/gallery/Discussion-board-styles

Do you think having a link to such a page (although, of course, less bulky then what I've choosen to put them in - there are much easier ways to do this) that displays only the 'standard' styles would be helpful?

So, have a 'preview' link next to the option to select your forum style, that points to a single page (hosted on PunBB and created by PunBB) with something like the above...  I would argue that it would be nice to have...

Where is the option for changing the style?

(Working from a 'yes')

Most sites it's either on the top right, bottom left, or bottom right corners.

Now, we're working from Joe Schmoe who hasn't logged in.  Chances are he's not going to view the very bottom of the page, so that suggests upper right corner, perhaps on the same line as the main forum links.

For testing purposes, however, if we say that this is what such a feature would be used for, I would argue for placement in the bottom right corner, right under the PunBB copyright information.

Pull the currently installed styles into a dropdown (like how it's pulled on the Options page), have a 'preview'/'change'/'whatever' button, that refreshes the page with the new style.  You could have this display or not based upon a prefence in the admin area.

The alternative would be to have a page/plugin on the admin side that allows you to do this.  You would see a preview of the various pages, or various styles, and could preview stylesheets from there.

It removes this from the user's side, so they still have two/three clicks to preview a stylesheet (plus 2/3 more to go back), but it gives admins a useful tool at least ...

Point made - I like the possible demo use - seeing a style change on one press of the button, instead of two/three (change style, save changes, go back to preferences screen) would be nice, if you're not sure what each style looks like ...  *That* would be a somewhat easier change.

Beyond demos - point taken, it would be impractical and bulky.

1) Great styles - definitely like your mouseover/hover effects.  Easy to read, etcetera.

2) Great avatar on that board - fits very well with the look of the boards.

I was actually thinking as a variable passed through the URL to PHP...  That's probably more of a PunBB enhancement, rather than something that individuals should take on, though.  I'm also not sure of the usefulness of such a feature, nor whether it has already been recommended.

Ah, snazzy - very nice big_smile

The ability to choose, from any page, a style/scheme to use, that stays with a user (whether logged in or not) should be fairly easy to do, right? (Pass through the URL - maybe this has been addressed elsewhere already)

In my opinion, much better, and not as confusing to me smile

So that's intentional that the logo acts like a thumbnail (click on the thumbnail to get a larger image)?  If so, why?  smile

One thing that I would do is throw some breaks into your rules document.  Currently, it's a very long paragraph wink

Also, one typo jumped out at me in my brief skim - 'witch' instead of 'which' wink

I agree with Edward on all points.

However, while I would also suggest greater contrast, how it looks looks great as well (even though it may not be the most accessible).

Unless you're planning to throw the Juppon content within a wrapper of some sort, definitely expand and/or increase font size (doing the latter you would almost have to do the former).

Not too bad - it appears to work fairly well.  You're missing 'Supplementary information' from the main navigation (it's in the dropdown), but I don't know if that's intentional or not.

My only real comment is regarding the colour scheme - have you thought about your choice of yellow and red?  Maybe it's just me and the time, but the yellow and red is a bit hard on the eyes. big_smile

I lied.  Also, why have your main logo point to your main logo?  Have this link to the main page of your site, instead.  The 'Home' link will get you home, certainly, but most people equate site logo with link to home page.

I'd recommend you think about what Alexander says about placement.  I've placed my Google AdSense ads near the top of the page, and have gotten a number of clicks from this area.  While I can't say whether or not it's really based upon placement (I'm not going to move them to the bottom - thanks wink ) looking at your forum I find the AdSense links to be buried.  I see Pages: 1 and stop right there - maybe letting my eyes wander to the dropdown.

If you are going to keep the ads way down under, I recommend you change the style of the ads.  I can't speak for style for higher placement, but since I'm arguing that I can't see the ads now, one way of making them stand out would be a different style ...  If you move them up, then that may change.

Of course, the problem with moving the ads up is that the current flow is quite nice.  Since you've got a huge top image, adding anything more before your forum is going to cause problems (on 1024x768 and Firefox, I can see only the first post in your forum, and on 800x600 I can see nothing past Le Forum).

May I suggest that you resize/combine "Le Forum" and "Talk about how good we are in here" (keep them on two lines, but either decrease the space between them and/or resize the font).

Of course, if you're stats say that your users use 1280x1024 primarily, then disregard my comments, as your site looks pretty nice in that resolution.

(And your styles/colour scheme look great in any resolution, by the way - very nice.)
