I was just about to say that the sites frontpage jquake.com took 30 seconds to load on a broadband connection. I don't see how that can be PunBB related, more like a server problem.

The span is used because the effect being created is purely visual i.e. it is not supposed to be different semantically from the heading tag which contains it. That being the case a semantically neutral tag is required.
This thread wasn't intended for in depth discussions of xhtml/css so I think I had better shut up on the subject for the moment.

Re: Config file does not exist (13 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 troubleshooting)
.. i have the mysqladmin program on, i checked the database exists using the mysql monitor. But is the database i mage for punBB meant to be displayed in the databases section in the msqladmin program? coz it doesn't, it just showes the "test" database.
Then your database would not appear to exist. Create the database and run install again.

Re: non-empty $post_link (2 replies, posted in Feature requests)
It looks to me like you are trying to style the post link to look like a button or something similar. Why style the td, if you style the link then you won't have a problem. When guest posting is disabled then $post_link does not actually contain a link so the styling won't operate. If you need a double border put a div around the link and give that a border as well.
$post_link = '<div class="punpostbutton>"<a....."></a></div>
Then style it with
.punpostbutton{}
.punpostbutton a {}
If you style the a:hover you have even got a rollover if you like such things

Re: ID tags for tables in html please! (5 replies, posted in Feature requests)
heidip: In the next release virtually all the tables are gone. All the main elements have id's and just about all the board elements can be accessed using contextual selectors if a class if not available or needs to be overruled. Does that cheer you up.

Re: Tips on Increasing Forum Activity? (10 replies, posted in General discussion)
From what I've seen, the only solo forums that grow are
1. Where it was created for a pre-existing membership e.g. a school, club, local community or just a group of friends
2. Where the subject matter is relatively specialised and there are very few sources of information.
3. They are old so came into existence before forums got so popular
4. They are providing links to "alternative" software suppliers

Re: Tips on Increasing Forum Activity? (10 replies, posted in General discussion)
Try and make sure that the first couple of news items on the front page are something contentious i.e. something that the community you are trying to reach can't resist commenting on. That way you get them into the forum by the back door.
Overall though, Rickard is quite right. The real trick is to concentrate on getting people visiting the site. The forum should then grow naturally.

Re: Tips on Increasing Forum Activity? (10 replies, posted in General discussion)
I noted that you are linking to other peoples sites in your resources section. Are they linking back to you? If not, approach them and ask for a link back. People do look at resources sections in websites, it saves them the bother of having to google. In fact have a very comprehensive resources section is a good way to become popular, you effectively become a gateway.

Re: Guest Announcements (3 replies, posted in Feature requests)
If you are going to do that you might as well go the whole way and make it a quick login box like IPB and vBulletin use. As for being a good idea for PunBB, probably not, but it is a good idea for a mod. I'm surprised there is no mod for this already.

Will there be a lot of changes made to the CSS ?
All of it's changed. You will be able to do considerably more to style PunBB but doing the basic things like changing colour scheme will be easier than it is now. I have given thought to those who have integrated PunBB into their sites and have used PunBB class names for their own pages. Their sites should still work fine with virtually no alterations needed.

I'm afraid it's me thats holding things up at the moment. The one downside about GPL projects is that the people working on them have to earn a living in the real world. I am hoping to have enough of the XHTML/CSS finished during this week to deliver the whole thing back to Rickard so he can do his thing.

Too right. The download system is somewhat hit and miss as well. Yesterday it took me 10 minutes to download a 250k file and that was on broadband.

It's nice to have big ideas. Me, I would be happy if I could just get Divs to stop jumping about in Opera.
