Cool, you should post this on the SimplePie forums, Geoffrey and Ryan will get a kick out of seeing this.

Just getting ahead of the curve: Is this 1.3? Why isn't this 1.3? Where can I get 1.3? When 1.3 will be ready?!

Due to the overwhelming love for the PunBB 1.2.x series, the release of 1.3 has been postponed wink

So true, cause we're all in this together.

one can only hope it gets ported to PunBB/1.3.

I'd like to eventually style the forum to match the front end, so yes, my CrystalX ball shows a Pun Style in the future.

Over the last week, I put together a templating mechanism for Textpattern.

Now, let me clarify that I've been using Textpattern for over a year now, so last week's work took a year's worth of pondering. Which is why I cringe on what's best type of posts, well run it for a year and see wink

Today, I put up the TxP IDE forum. I went with the CrystalBlue style, added a background image and changed the margins to match up with the main site. Thanks to Nevethir, who I noticed was running PunBB 1.3 dev, for the style. Who knows, there may be a CrystalX look for PunBB 1.3 one day.

While configuring the forum, I came up with a poor man's integration scheme:

Textpattern has a fancy url sheme called section/title:
http://txpide.com/releases/txp-ide-r2254
PunBB 1.3 could have one like, forum/title:
http://txpide.net/releases/txp-ide-r2254

So on the front end, you program a button that builds the url scheme to link to the topic for discussion. There are caveats, the particular forum that a front end section links to cannot be allowed to have member postings, the moderator or admin controls adding new posts. Forum naming should match the front end for it to work, or else you need a lot of if's.

Poor man's integration is complete, write a story on the front end, copy paste it to a Textile enabled PunBB forum, just remember to use the same title. Oh, and one last thing, the title has to be unique but you can use this method for certain sections, product releases, etc. Your blog section could still work off of comments, if the chance of a unique title makes you uneasy.

Esteem,

You take something like Filebrowser, which guardian34 makes mention of, and tweak the CSS to match that of your forum. Then in Admin -> Options -> Additional menu items, you add something like 2 = <a href="http://mydomain.org/files/">Files</a>, which would give you a top menu item.

Does that make sense?

The new site feels kind of heavy to me, maybe it's just a very busy forum?

Then I would go the 1.3 route, you may converge at your target date with newer code.

Now, this is from a rather cloudy crystal ball, I've had no sleep and I'm running out of coffee.

fixed,

Looking over your list of modifications, how long do you estimate it will take to accomplish?

Then I think we can come up with a better idea of what would be your best route.

CMS Made Simple is not bad, very easy to administer: http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/

I use Textpattern myself, a different mindset but very powerful: http://textpattern.com/

I came upon PunBB almost three years ago, at Version 1.1.5, in June of 2004. I was already familiar with handling my front end content with a CMS, so I wanted to try my hand at a forum.

What PunBB had going for it, and still does, is that it's a very capable forum. Throw at it what you want, it renders your copied text exact and keeps track of who, what, where and when. It was also kind to my server, my first live PunBB install is still running on a Pentium Pro 200mhz. Styling, it never crossed my mind back then, it was about the digitized word.

Today, we'd like to take Pun to a different level, so styling is in vogue. If you've ever styled a front end, either using a freely available template or your own design, you know how hard it is to get the page to adjust to different browsers and font sizes. So moving forward on PunStyle, we have to take into account how well the current XHTML attributes of Oxygen can adjust to anything you throw at it and what container size it may reside in.

Too often, we pay attention to the looks and miss the brains.

PunBB is great, but I wish there was an even liter php forum script like this ultralean CMS. BTW, he uses PunBB for his forum! wink

sNews is really small, one script does it all. It's great for small sites, but if you want to really have a true CMS, then Textpattern would be a better choice.

Size does matter, the fewer lines of code, the easier to secure and hack up. But it gets to a point where you're limiting yourself for very little in return.

Yeah, that's it, dnfbb.

I mean it looked the same but it isn't very fast loading.
