I have both, and I wouldn't stop using PunBB where I use it, and as my main forum, my first choice.

Re: Can I add one more Base URL? (9 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 troubleshooting)
A website shouldn't have more than one URL. Well, in fact, it can't.
If your website is at site.com, you need a permanent redirect HTTP header from the others domains/URL (such as site.org, site.us, site.info, whatever) to the real one.

No, every PunBB version ever release up until now are guaranteed to be free forever.
humm... So, what does this say for 1.3? Since every version before 1.3 will remain free!
Every version until now, 1.3 alpha is GPL (labeled as such, and released to the public through Trac).
Frankly, for now, I don't believe the scenario where SoftDeluxe buy PunBB intellectual ownership to make a paid, proprietary, verison of PunBB. If that was their goal, they would have done so month ago, when they bought it.
Don't forget it has been done months and months ago, and nothing happened since (either good, or bad).

Re: Is there any other open source forum with support for plugins? (18 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 discussion)
More important, vB isn't libre (when Pun is GPL on top of that).
And vB is a huge mechanic... PunBB's 1.3 way of doing thing, philosophy, is much better... the mechanic, the forum capabilities, and nothing else in the core, everything else is a plugin.
With vB, by default it has a ton of useless junk that clutter the software, and slow it down dramatically.
The only drawback is the possible lack of official (or very serious) plugins, and the possible lack of plugins update tools.
We have this issue with Textpattern... is very rare to be able to use it without plugins, but one can't update his TXP install until the various plugin author have updated their plugin to the new version. And one has to keep track of changes, plugins updates, and so on, by hand, by himself. And keeping up to date several installations is a pain in the... rear area, a deep one.

Re: An update (124 replies, posted in News)
I've been looking at vBulletin because some of my forums and projects are to the point that I'd like to leverage all the professionally built, tested, and supported extensions. If a sponsorship deal allows for a paid version of punBB that has many tested extensions then I'm all for it.
I very much doubt it will be something along those lines. If that was the business plan, well, why waste several month? Why not announce it, or at least the buyout? It seems much more along the lines of using PunBB for their products, maybe refactored, or something like that.
Anyway, at this point, it's pure speculation.

So, now, without donations, if I want to use punbb without the copyright, what can I do?
Thanks.
This doesn't change anything in that area. It's not about who owns what, it's all about the GNU public license.
You can't alter the copyright of the sources.
You can remove if you want the Powered_by mention on the pages displayed.

Re: An update (124 replies, posted in News)
Whats' next? A special punBB for paying members. Now don't crucify me here people, but I think we are all entitled to our own opinions. I personally don't think anyone gains from this but the developers and those closely involved in punBB. Although you all have good intentions here for the project, I do think that you've (to quote a famous saying) "jumped the shark". Why does punBB need to rely on someone else funding the project. There are many great forums as well as CMS's out there that rely solely on advertising and they manage to still keep afloat. I think the company that is now involved has only one intention and that is to make money. They can never put the heart and sole into the project as you guys have for so long. Anyway, my prediction for punBB is that a lot of people will look for an alternative forum script. Lets see if I am right.
Most open source project with a certain size can't rely on pure advertisement and donation (the only exception I can find right now is Wikipedia, which is special). They all use other means, usually partnership of some kind and/or sell service around their products, to support them.

Re: An update (124 replies, posted in News)
One thing though. I'm curious about the lack of ?PunBB time? on your schedule, if you have a buyer.
SoftDeluxe (the company who bought PunBB, and isn't named in this post) didn't support and sponsor the development of 1.3? They only bought the intellectual property?
They can't devote a few thousand dollars on the 1.3 project, to ensure a quality RC is published before the end of the year?
I hope you haven't undersold your baby... on the market, as it is, PunBB is worth quite a bunch...

Since this wasn't even discussed, released, or anything, from the dev team; well if it's true nothing is impossible short of retroactively changing the license.
Note that, again if it's true, it's not per se a bad thing. PunBB would (short of a complete rewrite) still be open source, the dev team would have real money to work on it, etc.
I was just saying that there's some questions around, especially when we intersect the slow motion of development with that news.

Yes, on the paper PunBB 1.3 (well, probaly 1.3.5 or something, it won't be perfect at the first try) could very well be the best forum software, period.
Two problems though:
- 1.3 isn't here
- there's some question about the current and future state of PunBB (ownership, etc.)

Re: Design Faction - A place for moderately good graphic designers (9 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 show off)
Have a look at a punBB forum like http://macthemes2.net/forum to see what good graphic designers might like to see in a design-oriented punBB forum...
Or not...
On this example: main header can't be resized, thread's name have a *very* low contrast to the point of being impossible to read with some sun, the whole page has so many ill used images that it loads in block, slowly, like we were still in 1995, they have attempted a grid effect but it's off.... and I could go on.
Good graphic designers are, first and foremost, good designers. And this is not it. It might be more graphic intensive that the minimalist one presented (which has also a truckloads of issues, don't get me wrong) but it's no more usable.

Re: More markup (classes, ID's) (10 replies, posted in Feature requests)
You can't use the body tag. PunBB is a site component so it might have to fit into an existing page which already has an id.
Good point.
You can't use the outer wrapper because that already has an id which is the page identifier. It also has the class .pun which is used for sandboxing. That means adding extra wrapping divs.
Add it as a class then. Semantically, it's quite the same for this issue.
But I would also add it to the body, because if one's PunBB install is a standalone, one might want to be able to select the highest selector possible (and if it's integrated, then he doesn't need it).

Re: More markup (classes, ID's) (10 replies, posted in Feature requests)
More classes and id's whilst not harmful is not as simple as it sounds for the basic reason that the placement of id's and classes will rather depend on what you want to use them for. For example, lets say you have a board dedicated to discussing football. You decide you want each forum to reflect team colour. Easy enough to style the index page via a different id on each row. But what happens when you get to viewforum. Do you want the id on the main table which makes semantic sense or do you want it on the page wrapper so the whole page can be styled in the teams colours. And what happens when you get to viewtopic, should it have the forum id, the topic id or both and where do you put them?
This how I would do it:
On the index view (forums listing), the real (higher on the tree) container (whatever it is) of each forum has the ID of that forum. That also includes categories. It cover your example, and allow direct hyperlinking to it.
On the forum's view (threads listing), thread and post view, I would apply the forum's ID to the body of the page, and the categories's ID as classes for the body of the page.
As for syntax, it might be something as simple as f21 (for forum #21) and c3 (for category 3).

Re: More markup (classes, ID's) (10 replies, posted in Feature requests)
I second this.
Not for the same reason, but having at least an ID by forum (and forum's category) would allow hyperlink to it (with an anchor).

Re: db back up (9 replies, posted in PunBB 1.2 troubleshooting)
Use direct MySQL tools, such as MysqlDump, and not phpmyadmin. Those can handle quite large files.
If you don't have access to those (through ssh for example), get a real hosting company.
