While duplicate content is a factor there are many more seo factors and punbb has nothing to worry about. Almost all forums software that is available on the "market" has some sort of "problem" with duplicate content and still a lot of forums rank high in serps 
Anyway punbb 1.2 I find optimized as it is

Some may see this as a problem but let me tell you that punbb by itself is sooooo search engine friendly ! There are no supplemental results ( as you can see with mybb and phpbb forums ! ) and all my punbb forums googlebot loves very much and indexes new topics the same or next day .... all pages are indexed perfectly so I would not touch punbb with any seo mod .... just my 2c ....

punbb is very search engine friendly ! It gets spidered and is even ranking higher than blog with friendly urls ( I tested this myself ) Friendly urls are last thing you need in terms of seo
