Will that show up as a background image, or as an image placed above the forum (like a header, but just on the index page)?

Thanks much guys... really appreciate it!

(this is exactly why I've donated to punbb... great application and great community)

elbekko, sounds good. Can you give me a quick walkthrough?  #punindex ID is in the css file right?

Can someone give me an example of where to insert the image call?

Thanks!

Hey guardian34!  "very top" = above everything else.  For example, above "PunBB.org Forums" on this forum.  Again, just want it on the index page only.

Thanks!

Hi All,

Quick questions... probably an easy answer:   How do I post a picture on the very top of the index.php page only?   I know how to edit the main.tpl file, but this is for all pages, I just want the image on the first / index.php page at the very top.

I give thanks in advance to thee masters-of-the-code!

Paul, you rock!   I added that to my main (and only) style / css sheet (at the very end) and it worded like a charm.  No code change needed!  Great work!

This looks pretty cool!  Any thoughts / comments on how this may effect performance of punBB?

Actually, to make this a lot easier, maybe I will just change the parameter for "Recent posts" from show_24h to an integer so that people can change it themselves if they want to. An extension could then easily add a new search option. I'll put it on the list.

Great idea!   I've already adjusted the "recent posts" time to be for the past 48 hours on one forum, and 72 for another.

thanks guardian34.  Unfortunately no matter what I do I can't get it on the same line as the "jump to" is there no way to do this?

guardian34, thanks for the reply.

That's close to what I want, but that also kicked over "Jump to" to the far right.

Is there a simple way to change the footer to say:

Jump to recent topics or

Just like what is already in the footer, but simply adding the link to "recent topics" after jump to.

OK,  quick question...   I want to put a link to the "Recent Topics" at the bottom of each page, specifically the "viewtopic" page so when someone is done reading a topic they can go right to recent topics list.   I don't want to mess up the otherwise super clean interface of punbb, so I'm thinking of just adding a link right next to the "Jump to" text.

Something like this:

Jump to recent topics or
<PULLDOWN>

I've got no idea how / where to insert the link/text to recent topics.  Seems simple enough, and probably is for one of you php masters.  Can someone give me a quick:  "insert the following code in this page, on line xxx"

Thanks in advance!!!

(by the way, if you have a suggestion for a better place for this link, let me know)>

Yann, you've got an amazingly huge forum.   Any details you're willing to share with us regarding resource usage for a huge punbb forum?

Smartys, I'll take your advice and ask you!   You've got 104 forums with 1368 users and 28k posts.   Do you mind sharing with the group what is required to run that?   Can you PM me if you don't want to share?

This whole thread is fun and is helpful to see what punbb can do, but it would be even better if there were more stats regarding the resources the large boards are consuming.   For example, would we expect to see that the boards with over 150 posts per day all run on a dedicated server that is only hosting that forum?   Or is it more appropriate to say boards with over 300 posts per day?    I know there are not hard numbers, but it would be great to know ballpark.

Anybody have an idea of what is required to run board this size?   I know punbb is pretty slim on resource usage, but I'd love to know what is required to run a punbb forum with 9,000 members and 300,000 posts.

I know there are a million server variables, but in general, I'm guessing a shared host couldn't' handle this right?  You'd need some beefed up VPS or Dedicated, correct?

By the way, I noticed Textdrive's punbb forum doesn't have a search on it for guests.  Did they remove this to keep performance up?  I also noticed that http://www.macaddict.com/forums/ is currently unavailable... this made me wonder what was going on.

Looking forward to your replies and experiences with hosting really big punbb forums!

Does anybody have performance data on the flashchat script?  I just tried x7chat with 10 users and it quadrupled my server load.

If flashchat has better performance for the server I'll definately try it.

Thanks!

brotherlordacid, please keep me posted as you use it.   The tufat forums have mixed reviews on how stable flashchat is, and also how many users it can support at once.

Thanks!

funny, I was just looking at flashchat and wondering if it would work with PunBB.  Since it works with SMF and phpBB I don't see why it wouldnt' work with Punbb.

I've been testing x7chan and phpfreechat, both of which integrate into punbb.  Would be really interested in other chat programs (paid or free) that can be integrated into punbb.   I'm specifically looknig for chat with direct/private chat and other basic features (change color, etc.)

I was pretty impressed that the following are using PunBB (well, besides me) wink

http://forum.textpattern.com
http://www.sgal.org/forum
http://forum.textdrive.com

That definitely says something!

pedrotuga, really good points!   I'm thinking I may go for a balance:   Add a few very important mods and also train my community that all the bells / whitles don't make as much difference as they think they do.

Another concern is monitoring / updating multiple forum applications.   The last thing I want to do is become an admin over punbb, smf, phpbb, etc. etc. etc.   It's nice to have one common script and know the ins/outs of that one program.

It should also be noted that the extension support in 1.3 will make life a lot easier. We'll have a couple of officially supported extensions (for popular items such as PM). You can expect these to be of the same quality as the rest of PunBB.

That's what I needed to hear, thanks Rickard!

Hey Everyone!

First off, I'm a huge fan of PunBB.  I've been using it for 2 years on my inkjet forum and it works PERFECTLY.  I even made a donation to show my support.   I've installed a few simple mods, but nothing major.

I'm in the process of starting a new community based site and wanted to use PunBB as my core... even using it as my user management system to base the rest of my custom built CMS off of.

Here's my dilemma: This community will need more bells and whistles than my inkjet forum community... for example, Private Messaging.   I know... I know.. there is a PM mod, but here's the big question... at what point does it make sense to move to another forum software (don't stone me) instead of putting hacks on hacks?    Is it safe to assume that a forum like SMF that has PM built into it will be more "secure" and less problematic during core upgrades then punBB using a mod and hoping that when the core is upgraded, the mod will still work?  Also, how often does one mod install interfere with another?   And, are mods usually built to the same quality standard as the punBB core?

This is just an example, so don't get hung up on the PM mod... it could very well be any one of many mods that effect the DB and make a lot of changes to a lot of pages.

Am I making any sense?   I need help / reassurance that sticking with PunBB is the right thing to do.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments!

Hey All,

I've been experimenting with syndication and it is pretty fun: http://punbb.org/docs/dev.html

I noticed I can pull in "general stats" but I haven't found out how to pull in very specific data, for example:

How do I pull in the total number of registered users into a php page?

I've got another good one:  I'm integrating punbb into my CMS... how can I pull the following into the member's pages:

Show your posts
Show your subscribed topics
Last 5 posts by member "XXXX"

Now that would be cool!

Thanks guys!

Can someone show me what to copy and where to paste the code for "subscribe" functionality as it is in post.php?

Cheers!

Hi All,

I'm thinking about getting rid of quick post for two reasons:

1)  Often user's are typing a reply to a great thread they just read... they are about done typing the reply and think, "Oh... I better subscribe to this."   Well, here's what happens and can be frustrating:
       a)  They hit the subscribe link above and what they typed in the quick post is gone.
       b)  They try to remember to go back and scroll down the page then click "subscribe".

2)  Adsense:
       a)  If the user has to go to another page, that's one more opportunity to get them to click on an ad.
       b)  When the quick post is gone, the ads in my footer are more often visible / seen.

So, my questions / requests:

1)  If I remove the Quick Post, how can I make the "Post Reply" link more prominent?  It seems so hidden to the bottom right when users are accustomed to the quick post at the bottom left.  Many user's may think they lost posting privileges if Quick Post is gone.

2)  Is it possible to make "Post Reply" an image so it will really stand out once I make the switch?  If so, can I get some pointers on how to do this?

3)  If I decide to keep Quick Post, is there a way to put the "Subscribe to this topic" check box under the "Quick Post" text area like in the "Post Reply" section?

Thanks much!

I'm looking for a good CMS solution as well.   At times I'm concerned that PunBB and some of the main CMS's (bloated as they might be) don't play nice together.   I'm fighting not to use SMF, but it is hard when it seems that SMF plays nice with most of the main CMS's.

I'm planning to start with PunBB for a new project and hope that I can tie in a CMS down the road.  I hope I don't paint myself into a corner with compatibility issues.

Well.... I'll be darned!    I guess it may have been a session issue?    I closed all my browser windows and went to my forum, logged out the current user.  Registered / logged in a new user.  Went to chat and POW.... everything worked perfectly!

Thanks Smartys!    Now I just need to find ways to display either the number of users in chat, or maybe even the userID's in chat!
