Hewitt, you were asking about graphics, was this what you had in mind or something more fancy.

Hey, I don't know about you guys but I tried viewing my site and then my forums with Netscape and it was bad news. My forums didn't even load for some reason, so I thought I'd come here to see if it was just me. Well, punbb.org did load, but it was so jumbled and disorganized that I was forced to quit. My conclusion was Netscape is of very low quality. sad

Which version of Netscape. I have tested it with NS7 and Mozilla 1.4 and its fine. It certainly will fall apart spectacularly in NS4 and IE4 because they can't handle the CSS properly.

Slightly off topic, but I have tested PunBB in the following

IE6 - Perfect
Firebird - Perfect
Mozilla 1.4 - Perfect
NS7.1 - Perfect
NS4 - Ugly Splat
IE4 - Ugly Splat (Not tested but assumed)

Anybody tried PunBB in IE5/5.5 or IE for Mac. I would be curious to know the results.

EDIT

Just tried your site, whole site not just the forum, with NS7 and Mozilla 1.4. Worked perfectly.

Hey, another big thanks ps21. smile Skinning my boards would have taken a lot longer without your guide. With that right beside me, I had it done in 15 minutes. That's what I like to see. wink

Glad to have been of help. Thats exactly what I was aiming at. My own experience of skinning various things is that the most time consuming part is working out which bit does what. I figured if I was going to have to work it out for myself I might as well share the results with everybody else.

Was there anything you thought could have been done better/different, anything missed, anything you would like to see added etc.

If only it were true, from your point of view it would be very good news. If Invision were really looking to release a "lite" board that would mean a bigger audience for PunBB than you thought.

Pity it's so unbelievable otherwise this would truly be your chance for PunBB world domination smile

EDITED due to missing obvious hoax on first very quick reading smile What do you expect, it is Friday.

Sounds like a good idea. I can't seem to find the source psd file though. Maybe you could just create one from one of the png files?

OK. Will do. Maybe I will really let my hair down and make a round one smile

Kennel wrote:

Done.

ps21: I uploaded your guide to the punbb.org server. The download link can be found on the download page. I also took the liberty of renaming the file a little. I hope you don't mind smile

Once again, great work!

Thanks. Glad you liked it. I am sure people are going to point out mistakes or things I could have added. If I alter it in any way I will let you know. From now on I will use your filename to make things easier.

One thought I had. Would it be a good idea to bundle the source file of the newpost graphic, e.g. the .psd file, with the PunBB distribution file or the skinning guide. That way people can change the colour without having to recreate the graphic. If you could let me have the source file I can put it into Photoshop/PSPro/Fireworks format as required.

Can't you just move the topic to a special forum of some kind? If you don't want any new posts there, you can just lock the forum.

That makes more sense. I can see a time when this board has grown to the point when it would be useful to have a read only Knowledgebase forum containing instructions on various things, code snippets people have posted etc.

Much better. Makes it easier to add/mod other links next to email/website as well.

I thought he was talking about archiving old posts/threads i.e taking them off the board and putting them into storage so the number of posts didn't grow too large and slow the whole thing down. I think the idea is that the Admin instead of just pruning/deleting old posts moves them to an archive instead.

Hi, finally managed to produce what I think is the finished Skinning Guide.

I am sure I have missed quite a few things so if some of you could have a look at it and let me know whats missing I'd be grateful.

I should make it clear that this guide is simply intented to make it easy for people to identify which styles control which part of the board, its not a CSS howto or instructions for doing really fancy things to your board like adding graphic rollovers.

I am thinking of adding a hints and tips section to the end so if anybody has anything they would like to share let me know.

If anybody has a desperate need to know something that is not covered let me know and I may add it (as long as it doesn't involve me having to learn php).

P.S. Request for a mod - a smell checker plesae.

EDIT
Stupid me, forgot the link
http://www.post21.co.uk/files/PunBBSG101.zip

It is looking good. I have phpBB, Invision Board 1.1 and Invision Board 1.2 set up on my local machine and can install other BB scripts as well. If you want any testing done let me know. Also, I have commercial webhosting with 5 mysql databases so I can do testing on a remote server if that may be of help.

Personally I would just go and get the 30 day free trial of Sqlyog. That will backup databases, create backup scripts, copy databases from one server to another or synchronise two servers. I am of course assuming you have access to a windows machine to install the app on.

Kennel wrote:

I can only think of one place where that class is used and that is in admin_users.php when you search for users and the user isn't validated.

<span class="punhot">Not validated</span>

But, since it is only used in one single place, I guess it might as well be removed smile

That explains why I couln't find it. Rather than get rid of it why not change it to .punclosed { color: #AAAAAA } since you already have link and hover styles for punclosed. That way you keep the colour differentiation for users that are not validated and you can remove the punhot link and hover styles.

Thanks Kennel. I have sorted out the errors now and am very nearly finished.

One thing I am a bit stumped on at the moment. There is a class .punhot and also link and hover pseudo classes for punhot. I assume these are for hot topics but I cannot find how to configure a topic as hot and none of the topics on this board show up as hot. Am I missing something obvious.

As for the stylesheet generally, there is nothing I can think of at the moment which needs changing. I think it is probably as small as it can be. The only thing that I might think of adding is a way to style the main menu so it could be made to stand out more. Apart from that I think adding more classes for different board elements is a bad idea as you can end up with a skin which looks inconsistent which rather defeats the whole purpose of using CSS.

Just to let people know the skinning guide is getting done, its just taking longer than I thought. I was delayed by having to work for a living. Anyway, I have altered a few things and added quite a lot. Main thing left to do is to deal with the styles for text links and form elements plus a few bits and pieces. If anybody wants to take a look a latest version is at the same link as before.

hmm... just a question ... what on earth would you write in a 'general help file'?

it's not like the board is hard to understand or has too many features that needs explaining or something... for me everything is quite self explaining.

You set up a site lets say dealing with a particular medical condition affecting the elderly. You want to deploy a discussion board both as a community and as an information resource. The majority of your visitors have not used the internet before. They don't even know what a link is. The term login is meaningless until you tell them it means "signing in". They think cookies are something that come with milk and "post reply" means they have to send in thier contribution by snail mail. Are you getting the picture smile

OK. So what we need is to come up with a general help file for the board. Any volunteers.

Thanks, much appreciated. I think I must be improving, I actually understand the code.

I am sure I read about this IE quirk somewhere else and the other solution suggested was to include the following before outputting pages

header("Cache-control: private");

Don't ask me for any further explanation, I am not a codehead yet, just an aspiring one.

EDIT
Ignore me, I am having a thick day. I just noticed it's already included in header.php. I think I had better stick to CSS, I can't get my head round the real coding smile

I don't suppose you would care to share the fix would you just in case I actually deploy a board prior to 1.1. I am quite happy hacking about with code if required. My guess is that the posting times were being adjusted according to users timezone but were then being compared with your server rather than users PC.

BTW. This will make you happy. I just installed a copy of Invision Board 1.2 on my own PC just out of curiousity. The pages of this board hosted on your server are actually loading faster than Invision Board installed on my own PC. That really is fast.

Yes it is. I assume thats because you are one hour ahead of me so between 11pm and midnight my time we were on different days.

I am sure this has been posted but I can't remember where. Suddenly all posts are showing up as Yesterday. I am posting this at 23.24 on 2nd September 2003. Have there really been no posts today.

Just a thought, has this got anything to do with time changes during the summer. My timezone is set to 00GMT. Of course at the moment the time is actually GMT+1 because it is summer "allegedly". On second thoughts, that would not explain it because it is now 22.24 GMT. Any ideas?

Edit
Just submitted this post and it tells me I posted it yesterday.

Edit again
This seems to be the same problem Fly had here except I am having the problem with this board rather than my own.
