I guess I owe you one. smile smile

Yes, the forum I just showed you is new with little to no legit activity yet, so it is easy to play around without bothering any users. It has also had about 100 spam bot regristrants per day (4-5) per hour. I know the exact number because I set the "unconfirmed delete" to two hours and the number is almost constant. Just last night I put on the capcha extension and that almost fixed it. There were still a couple there today. So anyway, I guess this would be the perfect test bed.

What do you want me to do?

Yes! You've fixed it. That's wonderful - thanks!

Now it is possible to use the pun_attachment extension for showing pictures on the forum. Until this fix, one had to host pictures on another site.

Oops!!! Sorry dimkalinux. I was just cleaning up the recent registrants, and I mistook you for spam without thinking. When I see the name again I will leave it there. Again sorry - I'm an idiot. sad

Anyway, I'll try your fix right now and get right back to you.

Cant reproduce problem - use firefox-4 and Chromium-10.

Thanks for looking at it dimkalinux. I don't think it has anything to do with the browser. I've tried it in a bunch of them. Anyway, just for you, I made a test for this so you can see for yourself. I'll probably delete the post after a few days.

You will have to register first.
Then, without logging in, go to this page:

Now log in.
See?

Since development is starting up again, I'll bump this thread, even though I know it is on the bugs to fix list.

VBulletin has a similar problem. With that software, if you click on a file, if it doesn't show (or download) then it will ask you to log in. If you then do that, you are stuck and can't view the rest of the board. I'm sure that PunBB can do better than vBulletin which is full of user interface bugs. Apparently they charge money too, which is kinda embarrassing, I think.

That sounds great. I'm going to take this as an opportunity to figure out how IRC works. I'll use a DOS or UNIX utility though, since I have absolutely no idea on how to run the above suggestion.  big_smile

I agree that it is not very important for people to change the timeout value. Someone like me who has a temporary need, will find it in the code fast enough. I plan to change the language too, but I'll wait to see if this (hopefully temporary) storm blows over, and then decide on an appropriate time.

Perhaps it's time for me to find some other solution, like a challenge test or something. I'm getting a steady 6 junk registrations per hour and that must also be generating e-mail noise for the servers.

@Ole Juul: The code is triggered only each time someone tries to register  wink

Thanks, I see now where I was confused. The users who had "registered" before I changed the timeout still had time left on the "clock". Now that I have been looking at this for a while I see it works well. Right now I have it set to 2 hours and there is a constant 5 or 6 unverifieds in the cue.

I"m thinking that most people will check their mail right away and click on the link so two hours is way more than enough, although Yahoo mail users may not be able to make it in time - we'll see how it goes. Personally I think that 72 hours is much too high in a situation like mine. That represents about 400 user accounts.

It didn't delete unverified users after 12 hours, so I set it to 15 minutes. After a couple of hours, they were deleted. However there next batch is not disappearing after 15 minutes as I has hoped. It seems that there is some other timer involved. Any ideas?

I've installed several PunBB fourms and every time that has resulted in me making the permissions on the cache to 777 and then discovering that I can put it back later. It does waste a lot of time figuring it out. I assume that everybody goes through that process. Anyway, it's nice to see it's on the list now. Thanks hcs. smile

Nonante: Nobody have never reported this error ?

That really surprises me too, but I don't think people are aware that it is not their fault. I thought I had done something wrong. I also worry about how many wide open cache directories there are out there.

Current solution: remove all unverified older than 72 hours.
Removing in register.php

I just put in the fix on one forum and set it to 12 hours so I can confirm tomorrow that it works. Then I think I will change it to 36 so that people who use bad e-mail services like Yahoo (where it can take a day to get your mail delivered) don't get screwed.

I'm having a little trouble parsing your post. smile Do you mean that under "Guest User permissions" you have checked "Allow users to view the board." and they still can? Or are you saying that they can view and post after they register?

If it is the first one, then something is broken. If it is the second one then you need to turn off registration.

KeyDog wrote:

In my view this is a bug. What possible scenario can there be for letting someone activate an account more than 48hours after initial registration.

Devs: can you fix this?

. . .

I would like to request this fix as well. smile I was just searching to see how to deal with this and this thread seems to be the answer. IOW, there is no fix yet.

BTW, I have found that I can put "yesterday" or "today" in the "Registered after" search box and both will show today's registrants. However, one still has to check them to see if one of them is possibly legitimate and not just waiting an hour.

What is to be gained? I don't think it is important. It is easy to find PunBB. It would be just as easy if it didn't have any ranking at all. Someone looking for forum software will be directed here from many other places.

I found PunBB by looking for forum software and reading what people said. That is probably normal, and ranking won't make any difference to that.

I just finished reading the page that KeyDog linked to, and that seems like a realistic view of the situation. They all give a different mix of features, but some are better than others. I do notice though that many web sites that I go to during the day are slow to get served and obviously have either overloaded servers, or (most important) have bad connection to the backbone. Anyway, in case it's of interest to you I've been using Superb Hosting for 3 years now and they've only been down for half an hour or so in that time, and the pages load pretty fast. I also only pay $6 a month and they respond right away to calls. No hosting company is perfect, but I feel I've been getting what they advertise. http://www.superb.net/

I'd just like to say that keeping the links is a nice gesture in return for getting the software for free. smile Yes, the links can be a bit obtrusive on some pages, but that can also be fixed by blending them in. You can see how I toned them down a bit on this site: http://ykix.org

I like Grez's suggestion, but here are a few to spark the imagination:

PunBB Forums: Because small and fast is good.
PunBB Forums: Function before form.
PunBB Forums: Simply works!
PunBB Forums: Elegance before sophistication.
PunBB Forums: The KISS principle.

and my favourite:
                         PunBB - Simply fast.

I think it is a good idea. The original "slogan" is a bit complicated and belongs to certain cultures who use those idioms. It is not really good English. I like KeyDog's suggestion better. Actually. the definitive article is not needed and, I think, sounds a bit Victorian. How about just:

PunBB - Lightweight PHP-Based Forum

Has there been a fix for this yet? It seems pretty important.

I just put a forum on a hosted server and got the same error. However, I am happy to report that KeyDog's code snip suggestion worked for me. Thanks KeyDog!

I don't understand the function of the icons anyway, so I've disabled them.

Hmm, it sounds like it may be a bug then.

Doesn't "The "from" address of e-mails sent by the forum" in e-mail admin do what it says? I'm just curious because I haven't tried it.

Oh, ah.. I already found out everything from Google and I also still prefer PunBB..

But you don't know what happens later, you've got to stay up-to-date. So yeah, I guess I'm gonna (try) move to FluxBB.

Thanks.

I too did my homework and checked out what I could regarding PunBB and FluxBB. I didn't come up with a clear answer about the "real" difference. I prefer PunBB and plan to stick with it.

One thing that I really like (and FluxBB will probably be the same) is the simplicity and the users ability to change things. I am completely green with PHP and have just started looking at CSS (yes a real amateur smile ) but even then I can change the theme and alter things. This is great software!

Regarding staying up-to-date, I don't find that so important. I often use older versions of things and have no trouble. I've been using some of my software since the 80s! I like stable. Having regular new releases is the very definition of instability. Still, you do have a point. What is happening with PunBB?

I wish there was a complete documentation of PunBB. I would love to contribute and make this project develop further.

It's a good project. I think everyone can contribute in some way. I notice that many users are not contributing to any sort of community here. They post once or twice and then they're gone. But then again, sometimes no one even takes the time to answer their posts. I don't think I've ever seen anyone say "welcome to the forum" here. It's a bit strange to me. I'm not a coder, but I try to contribute by keeping this forum alive. I don't expect developers to be doing this kind of work. It is up to us users.

There is already a button on the navigation bar for this purpose. It says "Profile" and goes directly to:

Posts and topics

    * View all your posts
    * View all your topics
    * View all your subscriptions

That's pretty standard for forums and users know how to use it. We all have our preferences, but I would think that choosing one of those links for the navbar and not the others, would just cause confusion.
